Stocks fell the most since June 1 as investors piled into lower-risk assets such as the dollar and U.S. government bonds. A report on manufacturing in the New York area also came in far below forecasts. That reignited fears that factory production, one of the few bright spots in the U.S. economy, might be weaker than many economists had believed. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 178.84 points, or 1.5 percent, to close at 11,897.27. The drop erased all of its 123-point gain from Tuesday and put the average on track for a seventh straight week of losses. HP sues Oracle as tech big shots’ animosity grows Posted: 15 Jun 2011 07:06 PM PDT SAN FRANCISCO – Hewlett-Packard Co. has sued its friend-turned-foe Oracle Corp. in another sign of how badly the relationship between the information technology big shots has frayed. The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Santa Clara County Superior Court, accuses Oracle of behaving illegally in deciding that future versions of its database software won’t support a particular line of HP servers. Those servers use a chip called Itanium that Oracle insists is being phased out, a claim the chip’s maker, Intel Corp., denies. The argument centers on a technical issue that reflects a broader fissure between the companies. Oracle and its outspoken CEO Larry Ellison are trying to take more turf from longtime partner HP, which is recovering from scandal. The rivalry ratcheted up last year when Mark Hurd was forced to resign as HP’s CEO and wound up working for his friend Ellison as an Oracle co-president. The hiring prompted HP to sue Hurd, alleging he couldn’t do the job without divulging HP trade secrets. That lawsuit was settled. The latest dustup shows that the animosity between the companies continues to grow. The dispute involves a chip that has been mocked for a decade – one sneering nickname for Itanium is “Itanic” – because it has failed to transform the semiconductor world the way Intel and HP originally envisioned. Amber Portwood Hospitalized After Possible Suicide Attempt Posted: 14 Jun 2011 09:06 PM PDT Teen Mom star Amber Portwood was rushed to the hospital in Indiana today, and reports from TMZ state that she threatened to take her own life. Cops in Anderson, Ind., say someone called police from Amber’s home claiming the 21-year-old “was depressed and threatening to end her life.” Amber Portwood did not appear to be injured when the cops arrived and she was promptly taken to a nearby medical facility for further evaluation. Amber is still in the hospital. Keep her in your thoughts. It’s unclear why Portwood was in shambles, but she and baby daddy Gary Shirley had actually been on relatively good terms in the last couple of months. It’s also unclear if this will affect season three of Teen Mom, which is set to begin next month and reunites Portwood with the rest of the original cast. More details to follow as the story develops … UPDATE: A police statement confirms that at 11:34 a.m. Anderson Police were called to a residence in the 1300 block of Pleasant Meadow Drive. According to the caller, Amber was threatening to end her life. She did not appear injured, and was transported to a medical facility for evaluation. An Anderson police source also confirms that the phone call was not made by Amber Portwood at her home, but by "a relative" at a different location.
